L. Letter from John Williams, Bishop of Lincoln, to the Revd. Peter Titley; [1627]. Contemporary copy. This undated letter was occasioned by a dispute between Titley, Vicar of St. Wolfran's, Grantham, and the town's alderman Thomas Wheatley over the re-siting of the communion table in the church. The episode is discussed and a variant text printed in Williams's The Holy Table, Name & Thing, 1637, pp. 5-21. See also E. Venables, 'The Altar-Controversy at Grantham in the Seventeenth Century', Associated Architectural Societies' Reports and Papers, vol. 13 (1875-6), pp. 46-61. Another copy is in Add. 29584, f. 1.
