HH John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough: letter to [Sir Charles Hedges], as secretary of state, from the camp at Asch; 24 Aug. 1702. Autograph, with an endorsement in Hedges' hand. A stray from the main sequence of Marlborough-Hedges letters, originally preserved in Hedges' family, afterwards in the ownership of Sir Winston Churchill and now Add. 70938-70941. The letter was apparently once part of a general autograph collection; attached is a unrelated note from Edward Bulwer-Lytton to Lord and Lady Lansdowne, circa 1830s. Purchased at Bloomsbury Book Auctions, 11 Nov. 1999, lot 66 (but incorrectly stated in the sale catalogue entry to be addressed to Lord Godolphin and written from the 'Camp at Reck').
