(min.) on sheet measuring 88 cm.x 154 cm. (max.) and 120.4 cm (min.) Scale bar of 2 lieues de France (=5.5") [appx. 1: 63500]. Ink and watercolours on paper. The inscription on the title page explains that the map 'Représente en grand et d'une manière fort détaillée, la partie de la côte méridionale de l'angleterre, qui s'étend depuis le sud Foreland jusqu'à Beachy-head qui comprend la partie principale de cette côte relativement au projet'. The map emphasises physical relief, woods and water in the typical style of a military survey. It also indicates sandbanks, beacons, church towers and windmills. Layouts given for the larger settlements. The scale, which is very close to one inch to the mile, suggests that the map derives from an English prototype, probably manuscript since no printed surveys of the whole area at that scale are known from such an early date. The most likely source was a manuscript Board of Ordnance map. It was not William Roy's survey of the same area at the same scale of about 1755 (now BL K. Top. 6.98) but presumably an earlier one, perhaps of the 1740s.
