Erich Alport (ff. 157): letters to Erich Alport from Sir Stephen Spender and others, including letters from Sir Geoffrey Cust Faber of Faber and Faber, and miscellaneous papers; 1919-1933, n.d.. Mostly autograph. Partly German.
1. ff. 1-69. Letters from Steven Spender to Alport; 2 July 1929-8 April 1933. Mostly autograph. Relating to Spender's travels, his first meeting with E. R. Curtius (ff. 14-15), a meeting with W. H. Auden (f. 33),. his work including the publication of 'Oxford Poetry' (f. 52), a poem [untitled], beg. 'Your body are stars whose million gutter here' (f. 60), and a novel, which he describes as 'pro-German-homosexual' (probably The Temple, which was not published until 1988) (ff. 31, 34, 36, 37, 57, 60). With a letter in response to the publication of Alport's W. H. Auden (f. 43). Christopher Isherwood is frequently mentioned (ff. 17, 33-34, 38, 40, 60).
2. f. 70. Letter from Stephen Spender to Wolfgang Clemen, Shakespeare scholar; 7 Jan. 1931.
3. ff. 71-74. Four poems by Stephen Spender; 1919. n.d. Mostly typewritten. Partly German. The poems are: 'Party Scene': ― [Untitled], beg. 'My child came home…': ― [Untitled], beg. 'Nich scheue Blicke [sic]…', with autograph dedication 'For Erich from Stephen'. The last poem: [Untitled], beg, 'Des Löwen Schrei im Käfig' [sic] includes the autograph dedication 'Stephen Spender: E. R. Curtius for Erich Alport'.
4. ff. 75-86. Letters to Alport from various correspondents; 30 June 1929-28 Nov. 1930. Mostly signed. Mostly German. The writers include Rudolph G. Binding (f. 75),Fridrich Gundolf (f. 79), Märit Scheler, wife of Max Scheler (f. 78), Elizabeth Gundolf (ff. 80-81, 83, 85), Werner Jaeger (f. 82), and the publishers Rütten & Loening Verlag (ff. 76-77).
5. ff. 87-113. Letters to Alport from Geoffrey Faber of Faber and Faber; 14 May 1929-31 July 1933, n.d. Mostly signed. Most of the letters relate to writers and books that Alport introduced to Fabers, including: Max Scheler (ff. 89, 90), Max Clauss (ff. 93, 96), E. R. Curtius (ff. 93, 96), Kurt Singer (ff. 93, 96), Marie Von Bunsen (f. 96), Alexander Platz (f. 99), Max René Hesse’s Partenau (1929) (ff. 91, 92, 103), Siegfried Sassoon’s Memoirs of a Fox Hunting Man', originally published in England in 1928 (ff. 92-93, 97), and G. B. Dibblee’s Instinct and Intuition: A Study in the Mental Duality (1929) (ff. 102, 105). There are also many references to T. S. Eliot and 'The Criterion', and a letter concerning Alport’s opposition to the publication of The Temple (f. 111).
6. ff. 114-142. :Letters to Alport from C. W. Stewart, Manager of Faber and Faber; 13-25 March 1930. Signed. Relating to German translation rights (ff.114-115), with a copy of the 1930 catalogue, annotated to show Faber’s rights (ff. 116-141). Also a card announcing that Mr George Blake had joined the Board of Directors of Faber (f. 142). Partly printed.
7. ff. 143-157. Miscellaneous papers including; handwritten notes (ff. 143-148), a typescript entitled 'Exposé' (ff. 149-151), a copy 'Das Opfer eines Freitodes' (f. 152) and four envelopes addressed to Alport (ff. 153-157).
