G. Letter from Elizabeth Ann Linley, afterwards Sheridan to an unnamed correspondent; 1772. Possibly copy, imperfect at beginning and end. This gives an evidently contemporary account of her flight from Bath with her future husband Richard Brinsley Sheridan on 'that fatal Wednesday', 18 March 1772. Sheridan, who accompanied her, had proposed that she enter a convent, promising to secure from his sister Alicia 'a letter of recommendation to St. Quinton [St. Quentin, in northern France] where she had been four years. Purchased from J. L. M. Gulley, Jan. 2001.
ff. 12-13. 189 x 156mm. Unwatermarked. Separate covering leaf (f. ?) docketed in two hands 'Part of a Letter of the late Mrs Sheridan found by accident Feb 13th 99', and 'Part of a letter of the late Mrs Sheridan found as waste paper by accident'.
