Althorp Papers. Vol. mccclxi. Narrative of the unfounded reports of the death of Capt. R.C. Spencer, written by his father George John, 2nd Earl Spencer. Rumours that Capt. Spencer had been killed in a duel with his 1st Lieutenant in Buenos Aires first reached England via merchant ships returning from Brazil in June 1820. After further investigations the Foreign Office and the Spencers concluded that the rumours were both too accurate and too persistent to be false and the family went into mourning. Only in September 1820 did letters definitely contradicting the report arrive in England; 1820.
