Max Stafford-Clark Papers - supplement 1. Vol. xxi. 'The Permanent Way, or, La Voie Anglaise' by David Hare; first performed by Out Of Joint theatre company in 2003. The play was a result of a two week period of research by Stafford-Clark, David Hare and a group of actors, meeting civil servants, directors of train companies, bereaved and survivors of train crashes. etc. David Hare created the play from the stories and reports of these meetings. Typescript of the play, a 'rehearsal draft' dated 25 September 2004, with a note that 'the play will be re-drafted during rehearsals and during its run', with extensive annotations in pencil by Stafford-Clark. Additional material includes a list of research contacts, backgrounds to be used for the production, casting lines and company contact sheet.
