Portsmouth: treatise by John Archer, beginning `Considerations on the Defence of Portsmouth by Major Archer Engineer’; 1773. Autograph fair copy. Followed by (ff. 23v-29v), `Memoire on the subject of the New Fortifications for enclosing His Majesty’s Dock Yard at Portsmouth: Submitted to the Lieutenant General and Principal Officers of his Majesty’s Ordnance’, 1771, and (ff. 30-32), `Orders for regulating the Working Party and Payment of His Majesty’s 20th Regiment of Foot employed on the Fortifications for enclosing the Dock Yard at Portsmouth 1773’. Related to Maps K. Top. 14.16: `A coloured plan of the Island of Portsea, shewing the present fortifications of Portsmouth, Gosport, lines and out forts, together with the works carrying on to secure his majesty’s dock-yard; with the intrenchments proposed by Major Archer for defending the Island …’. The stamp, `Townshend’, on the initial index leaf indicates provenance from George, Marquess Townshend, as Master General of the Ordnance For plans of Fort Monkton at Gosport by Archer, also from the Townshend papers, see Add. MS 5000 B, ff. 1-4.
