Eleanor Farjeon Papers. Vol. xlvi (ff. 183). ‘Sample Night and Day’ (ff. 1-37), ‘She Died Without Experience’ (ff. 38-81), ‘Tiger in a Meat-Safe’ (ff. 82-122), ‘The Tombola’ (ff. 123-148) and ‘Tom Cobble and Ooney’ (ff. 149-183); [circa 1940],, [circa 1941], n.d. Mostly typewritten. ‘Sample Night and Day’ is short story account of life during the Blitz set during one twenty-four hour period. ‘She Died Without Experience’ is an incomplete story about the death of a family’s governess. ‘Tiger in a Meat-Safe’ is an unpublished short story set during the Second World War. The character of Toni Novy appears to be a fictional version of Otto Lampel, the Czech émigré and pianist, with whom Eleanor had collaborated on ‘The Great Alexis’. For photocopies of letters from Eleanor Farjeon to Otto Lampel, see Add. 83138 and for ‘The Great Alexis’, see Add. 83091-83092. The text makes reference to a character named ‘Olaf’ (f. 122), who appears in the incomplete story ‘Olaf Hamsun: Eden Vale’, see Add. 83120. ‘The Tombola’ is a short story published in Faithful Jenny Dove and Other Tales (1925). ‘Tom Cobble and Ooney’ is a short story first published as Tom Cobble (1925) and subsequently collected in Martin Pippin in the Daisy-Field (1937).
