'Lavengro'. Drafts; circa 1844.

1. Draft, with many revisions and cancellations, of part of Vol. I, chapter vi, written on both sides of seven octavo leaves of white wove paper. No watermark. The final text found in the draft differs in many places from that printed on p. 79, l. 5-p. 87, l. 15. The leaves of the draft have been bound in the wrong order, and are as follows: (a) discarded passage: ff. 24-24b, l. 24; (b) p. 80, l. 18-p. 81, l. 4: f. 24b, l. 25-f. 25, l. 12; (c) p. 79, l. 5-p. 80, l. 18; f. 25, l. 13-f. 25b, l. 20; (d) p. 81, l. 4-l. 13: f. 25b, l. 21-end; (e) p. 86, l. 15-p. 87, l. 15 (with a discarded passage between f. 26, l. 19 and f. 28b, l. 12): ff. 26-28b; (f) p. 81, ll. 14-16, p. 81, l. 22-p. 86, l. 15: ff. 29-30b. 2. Draft of part of Vol. I, chapter ix, written on both sides of an octavo leaf of white wove paper. No watermark. Above the text on f. 31 is the heading 'Chap -'. '9' has been supplied in pencil by another hand. Two different hands have numbered f. 31, '121' (this possibly Borrow's), and '1', in pencil. The final text found in the draft differs in many places from that printed on pp. 118-120, l. 8. ff. 31, 31b.

3. Draft of part of Vol. I, chapter x, with discarded passages, written on both sides of an octavo leaf of white wove paper. No watermark. Two different hands have numbered f. 32, '122' (this possibly Borrow's), and '2', in pencil. The final text found in the draft differs in many places from that printed on p. 131, ll. 2-14. ff. 32, 32b.

4. Draft, heavily revised, of part of Vol. I, chapters xi and xii, written on both sides of five octavo leaves of white wove paper. No watermark. On f. 35b is the heading 'Chap(r)'. 'xii' has been supplied in pencil by another hand. The leaves have been numbered in pencil by a hand not Borrow's, but not necessarily the same as that which supplied the chapter number, as follows: - f. 33: '144'; f. 34: '146'; f. 35b: '149'; f. 36: '150'; f. 36b: '151'; f. 37: '152'. The final text found in the draft differs in many places from that printed on p. 144, l. 15-p. 153, l. 22. ff. 33-37b.

5. Draft, with discarded passages, of part of Vol. II, chapter iii, of George Borrow, The Romany Rye, written on both sides of two conjoined octavo leaves of grey wove paper. No watermark. The final text found in the draft differs only slightly from that printed on p. 46, ll. 13-25, and p. 47, l. 12 - p. 48, l. 4 of the first edition of 1857. ff. 38-39b.
