Fragments of 'The Death of Balder': a verse tragedy translated from the Danish of J. Ewald by George Borrow; [1821-1826?]. Ashley Library Catalogue, i, p. 48. As follows:
1. Two autograph fair copies of the title-page, one (f. 83) written on one side only of a quarto leaf of grey laid paper, watermarked with half the figure of Britannia, the other (f. 84) written on one side only of a quarto leaf of cream laid paper, also watermarked with half the figure of Britannia. On the verso of the first leaf (f. 83b) is an autograph fair copy of the Dramatis Personae, while on the verso of the second leaf (f. 84b) is an autograph fair copy of the Preface. ff. 83-84b.
2. Autograph drafts of most of the lyric passages of the poem, written at different times and on various papers, as follows: both sides of a quarto leaf of cream laid paper, watermarked with the figure of Britannia: ff. 83, 83b, 84, 84b; both sides of an octavo leaf of grey wove paper, unwatermarked: ff. 85, 85b; both sides of an octavo leaf of cream laid paper, watermarked with part of a fleur de lys: ff. 86, 86b, 89, 89b; both sides of a quarto leaf of cream wove paper, unwatermarked: ff. 87, 87b; one side only of a fragment of cream wove paper, unwatermarked: f. 88.
Also included is a passage on the Spanish people's reaction to the Carlist civil war, written parallel with the left hand side of the leaf after the passage from The Death Balder had been inscribed. f. 86.
