'Self-communion' and 'The Narrow Way': two poems by Anne Brontë; 1847-1848. Autograph fair copies, with revisions and deletions, written on both sides of nine octavo leaves of white wove paper and on one side only of a tenth. Watermark 'J Whatman/1833'. The longer poem, written on ff. 1-9, is entitled 'Self-communion' in Anne's hand, dated at the beginning 'begun Nov. 1847' and signed and dated at the end 'April 17th 1848/A.B.'. The shorter poem, written on ff. 9-10, is untitled in the MS. but signed and dated at the end 'A.B. April 24th 1848'. It was first published as 'The Narrow Way' in Wuthering Heights and Agnes Grey, by Ellis and Acton Bell, 1850, p. 145. The longer poem was first printed, by Wise, in Self-Communion, 1900.
