''Matin'' and ''Vesper'': two poems written at the age of fourteen by Charlotte Brontë; 1830. Autograph fair copies with revisions and deletions, written in minute characters in imitation of print on both sides of a leaf 93 x 57mm. of white wove paper. No watermark. The present MS. originally formed part of a notebook known as ''The Violet'' now in the Robert H. Taylor collection at Princeton. The poem ''Vesper'' is complete, and is signed and dated at the end ''Marquis of Douro'' and ''Charlotte Brontë November 11 1830''. The poem ''Matin'' is incomplete in the present MS., and represents the first thirty-two lines only. The remaining thirty-two lines are found in the Princeton MS., where they are signed and dated ''Marquis of Douro 12 November 1830''. ''Matin'', lines 1-32, was first printed, by Wise, in The Red Cross Knight and Other Poems, 1917, pp. 10-14. ''Vesper'' was first published (with the text derived from a different MS.) in The Complete Poems of Charlotte Brontë, 1923, pp. 114-115. Ashley Library Catalogue, ix, p. 19 (facsimile).
