Letters (37) from Edmund Gosse to W. T. Watts[-Dunton]; 23 Aug. 1876-6 May 1903. The principal subjects of the letters are efforts by Gosse to secure reviews of his work by Watts, and thanks for the reviews, requests from Gosse to Watts to use his influence with Swinburne, and complaints by Gosse of Swinburne's lack of appreciation of Gosse's friendship, congratulations to Watts on various articles, with suggestions that he publish a collection of them, and requests for contributions to various works edited by Gosse, a request to see round D. G. Rossetti's house before the sale of his effects after his death, an article on Rossetti by Gosse for the Century Magazine, and a proposed monument to Rossetti, and the choice of a Poet Laureate to succeed Tennyson. Also included (ff. 33-34b) is a letter from Mrs Gosse to Watts, 10 Aug. 1882, inviting him to meet W. D. Howells, the American novelist. Ashley Library Catalogue, ix, p. 83.
