Among the subjects of the letters are Meredith's attitude to his reviewers, Hardy's Tess of the D'Urbervilles, 1891, and the review of it in the Spectator, and praise of Frederick Greenwood, the journalist who suggested the purchase by the British government of the Suez Canal shares.
