Letter, enclosing a fair copy (f. 2) of a poem entitled 'Scire Teipsum', from Coventry Patmore to Edmund Gosse; 25 July 1882. In the letter Patmore praises a poem by Gosse 'which expresses with the vigour and joy of experience the Catholic doctrine that virginity is not the denial but the consummation of love' and states that his own verses express 'the reward of virginity ― attainable even in this life ― in the supernatural order'. Patmore further expresses the wish that Gosse might become 'a worker in the inexhaustible poetic mine of Catholic psychology'. Also included is a caricature of Patmore by T. Blake Wagman (f. 3), identified and dated by Gosse as circa 1893. (A caricature by the same artist of the first Lord Redesdale is 5739, f. 337.) Ashley Library Catalogue, x, p. 161.
