'On the French Liberation of Italy, 1859' and 'Autumn Song': two poems by D. G. Rossetti; [1859?] (before 1869) and after 1848. Autograph draft and autograph fair copy respectively, written in the case of the draft on a scrap of cream laid paper 115 x 180mm., watermark J Allen [ ] / Extra [ ], and in the case of the fair copy on a quarto leaf of cream ruled laid paper, no watermark. The first poem was printed in the first set of proofs for Poems, 1870 (see 1387), but was excluded thereafter. It was first published, in a form differing in several places from this MS., in Poems, 1904. The second poem was apparently first published in Love-Lily and other Songs, by Dante G. Rossetti, set to music by Edward Dannreuther, 1884. The two poems were together printed in Verses By Dante Gabriel Rossetti, 1881. This production is certainly a piracy, and possibly one of T. J. Wise's forgeries (see Thomas J. Wise: Centenary Studies, 1959, ed. William B. Todd). With the poems is (f. 149) one of Rossetti's visiting cards, with on the verso the note 'B. Morris ― Please answer the enquiries put by Mr Watts, & I will meet any engagement he makes. D G Rossetti'. [Ashley Library Catalogue, iv, p. 144.]
