'Threnody': a poem by A. C. Swinburne; [1892]. Draft, written on one side only of four large quarto leaves of blue wove paper. No watermark. The MS. has been entitled 'Threnody' in pencil by another hand. The three parts of the poem are numbered by Swinburne as in the printed version. The final text found in the draft differs by six words from that printed on pp. 149-152 of the first edition.
At the foot of f. 4a, inverted, are the deleted autograph phrases 'vitriolic egotism of Sir Mungo' and 'virulent senility'.
Accompanying the MS. are pp. 149-152 from a copy of Astrophel and Other Poems, 1894 (ff. 5, 6) and two letters from Emily Tennyson to Swinburne, 23 Oct. and 19 Dec. 1892, the first thanking him for his expression of sympathy on the death of Tennyson, the second for sending a MS. copy of 'Threnody'
(ff. 7-8b).
