'Astrophel and Other Poems'. 'Elegy'; [1891]. Draft of stanzas 1-28, written on both sides of two folio leaves of white wove paper (ff. 1 and 2), and on one side only of a third (f. 3). Watermark 'Hieratica / (a vegetable Parchment) / J. S & Co.'. The MS. is entitled 'Elegy' in Swinburne's hand.
As follows: Stanzas 1-5, f. 1a; stanzas 13-18, f. 1b; stanzas 6-12, f. 2a; stanza 19, f. 2b; stanzas 23-27, f. 2b inverted; stanzas 20-22, 28, f. 3a. Below stanza 5 is the autograph note in pencil 'Insert stanza introducing next one ― "Thy steep"―'. Below stanza 19 is the autograph note 'But on the soundless &c' [the first words of stanza 20], and below stanza 22 the autograph note 'Priests &c. . . . may read not and may read' [the first word of stanza 23 and the last words of stanza 27]. Following stanza 28 are the last two words of l. 132 and the whole of l. 133. The final text found in the draft differs by twenty-three words from that printed on pp. 127-134 of the first edition.
In a letter to W. T. Watts[-Dunton] dated 23 July 1891 Swinburne says 'I have added a few stanzas to my Auvergne elegy' (C. Y. Lang, Swinburne Letters, vi, 1962, p. 10). The poem was first published in the Fortnightly for July 1892.
Accompanying the MS. are pp. 127-136 from a copy of Astrophel and Other Poems, 1894 (ff. 4-8).
