'Charles Lamb and George Wither': an essay by A. C. Swinburne; 1884. Autograph draft of a passage subsequently cancelled, written on one side only of three quarto leaves of blue laid paper. Watermark 'E Towgood / 1882'. The portion of the draft found on the third leaf (f. 104a), with the addition of a reference to Dr Nott, the co-editor of George Wither, Juvenilia, 1820, was made use of in the final text of the essay as the greater part of the note found on pp. 163-164 of Swinburne's Miscellanies, 1886. The leaves are numbered in Swinburne's hand as follows:―f. 102: '13', '15' and '16' (all deleted); f. 103: '16'; f. 104: '17'. On the evidence of letters from Swinburne to W. T. Watts[-Dunton] dated 17 Oct., 29 Oct. and 2 Nov. 1884 (C. Y. Lang, Swinburne Letters, v, 1962, pp. 81-85) the draft was most probably written in Oct. 1884. The essay was first printed in the Nineteenth Century for Jan. 1885, pp. 66-91.
Accompanying the MS. is a letter (ff. 105, 105b, 106b) from Swinburne to Andrew Chatto, dated 'April 23' [1904], and printed in C. Y. Lang, op. cit., vi, 1962, p. 181. Ashley Library Catalogue, vi, pp. 158-159.
