'Poems and Ballads Third Series'. 'To a Seamew'; 1886. Fair copy, with twelve words revised, written on one side only of eight octavo leaves of cream wove paper. Watermark 'Hieratica / (a vegetable Parchment) / J. S & Co.' The text found in the fair copy is identical with that printed on pp. 62-69 of the first edition. On f. 8b is a deleted fair copy of one of the rejected stanzas found in the draft (A1926, ff. 126a, 127, 127b), and the deleted date 'September, 1886'. The side on which this is written has the deleted number '8' in Swinburne's hand, suggesting that the present stanza 15 was substituted for the deleted stanza. The revisions found in stanza 13 of the fair copy are also made in the draft, showing that it was used for these late alterations as well as for the composition of the substituted stanza 15. The fair copy is entitled 'To a Seamew' on f. 1, and beneath the present final stanza is the date 'Beachy Head, September, 1886'. The poem was first published in the English Illustrated Magazine for Oct. 1887. Bound up with the MS. are pp. 62-69 from a copy of Poems and Ballads Third Series (ff. 9-13).
