Idylls of the King. 'The Coming of Arthur'; [1869]. Two drafts of a discarded passage, each written on one side only of the same fragment, 74 x 103mm., of blue laid paper with part of an unidentified watermark. The paper seems to be the same as that used for A2104, ff. 17 and 20.
What appears to be the earlier draft is on the verso, and corresponds to ll. 266-268 of the printed version. It consists of six lines, beginning 'Then Arthur spake "Be ye my Table Round"' and ending '"And change the world" And while he spake I saw'. The later draft is on the recto, and corresponds to ll. 263-268. It consists of nine lines, of which the first is identical with l. 263 and the last reads '"And change the fashion of the world" I saw'.
According to his wife, on 13 Feb. 1869 Tennyson 'read what he had done of the birth and marriage of Arthur' and the poem was finished 'before the end of Feb' (Hallam, Lord Tennyson, Alfred Lord Tennyson: A Memoir, ii, 1897, pp. 63-64). The drafts are printed, with the omission of the last half line of the earlier, in Ashley Library Catalogue, vii, p. 111.
