'The Rose Tree': a poem by W. B. Yeats; 1917. Fair copy, with one revision, written on one side only of an octavo leaf of grey wove writing paper headed '18, Woburn Buildings, W. C.'. The leaf is one of two formed by folding a quarto sheet. Watermark 'The Temple / Ancient Vellum' and lamb and flag before a tree. The MS. is entitled 'Easter' in Yeats's hand, and dated 'WBYeats April 1917'. The text found in the fair copy exhibits the following variants from that first published in The Dial for Nov. 1920: The stanzas are not numbered; l. 4, hyphen between 'Rose' and 'tree'; l. 5, maybe / may be; ll. 7, 8, and 10, no comma; l. 12, To / And. The third stanza reads as follows in the MS.:
'But where shall we get water'
Said Pearse to Connolly
To make the blossom come again ―
O plain as plain can be
There's nothing but our own red blood
To make a right Rose-tree.
The poem was first collected in Michael Robartes and the Dancer, 1920 [1921]. There is a facsimile of this MS. in Ashley Library Catalogue, x, to face p. 224.
Octavo; ff. i+1.
