'The Serpent Knight', 'Sir Oluf', 'The Treacherous Merman', 'The Knight in the Deer's Shape', 'The Stalwart Monk', 'The Cruel Step-dame', and 'The Cuckoo': ballads translated from the Danish by George Borrow; after 1842-circa 1850. Autograph fair copies. Ashley Library Catalogue, i, p. 50. Bound up with the MSS. is a copy of Wise's private printing, The Serpent Knight and Other Ballads, 1913 (ff. 1-4, 6-7, 11-16, 21-23, 28-30, 33-34, 36). As follows:―
1. 'The Serpent Knight'; circa 1850. Fair copy, written on both sides of a quarto leaf of white laid paper. Watermark 'Hodgkinson & Co'. The word 'Serpent' in the title has been written in pencil above deleted 'Transformed'. ff. 5, 5b.
2. 'Sir Oluf'; after 1843. Fair copy, written on both sides of two quarto leaves of grey laid paper and one side only of a third (f. 10). Watermark '1843' and part of lion on crowned shield. ff. 8-10.
3. 'The Merman'; here entitled in pencil 'The Treacherous Merman', circa 1850. Fair copy, written on both sides of a quarto leaf of blue wove paper and on one side only of another (f. 14). No watermark. ff. 13-14.
4. 'The Knight in the Deer's Shape / or / The Deceiver Deceived'; circa 1850. Fair copy, written on both sides of three quarto leaves of blue laid paper and on one side only of a fourth (f. 20). Watermark 'HW'. ff. 17-20.
5. 'The Stalwart Monk'; circa 1850. Fair copy, with a few revisions in pencil, written on both sides of three quarto leaves of blue wove paper and one side only of a fourth. No watermark. ff. 24-27.
6. 'The Cruel Step-dame'; after 1842. Fair copy, written on both sides of two quarto leaves of grey laid paper. Watermark '1842' and part of lion on crowned shield. ff. 31-32b.
7. 'The Cuckoo. From the Danish.'; circa 1850. Fair copy, written on both sides of a quarto leaf of white laid paper. Watermark part of lion on crowned shield. ff. 35, 35b.
