'The Return of the Dead', 'The Transformed Damsel', 'The Forced Consent', and 'Ingeborg's Disguise': ballads translated from the Danish by George Borrow. For the dating of the MSS. see the description of 2396. Ashley Library Catalogue, i, p. 52. As follows:―
1. 'The Return of the Dead'; 1850-[1857?]. Autograph fair copy, with a few pencil revisions, written on both sides of five quarto leaves of grey laid paper. Watermark 'HODGKINSON & Co / 1850' and lion with trident on crowned shield. Entitled in Borrow's hand as above. Printed in The Works of George Borrow, vii, 1923, pp. 127-132. ff. 4-8b.
2. 'The Transformed Damsel'; [before 1857?]. Autograph fair copy, written on both sides of a quarto leaf of white laid paper. No watermark. Entitled as above in Borrow's hand. Printed in The Works of George Borrow, vii, 1923, pp. 145-146. ff. 13, 13b.
3. 'The Forced Consent'; 1842-[1857?]. Autograph fair copy, with one revision, written on both sides of two quarto leaves of white laid paper. Watermark '1842'. Entitled as above in Borrow's hand. Printed in The Works of George Borrow, viii, 1923, pp. 42-44. ff. 15-16b.
4. 'Ingeborg's Disguise'; [before 1857?]. Autograph fair copy, written on both sides of a quarto leaf of grey laid paper. Watermark part of a lion with trident on crowned shield. Entitled as above in Borrow's hand. Printed in The Works of George Borrow, viii, 1923, pp. 75-76. ff. 19, 19b.
Also included is an autograph fair copy, with one revision, of the song printed in The Works of George Borrow, ix, p. 204, written on one side only of a quarto leaf of blue laid paper, without watermark (f. 22); circa 1855. Bound up with the MSS. is a copy of Wise's privately printed The Return of the Dead and other ballads, 1913 (ff. 1-3, 9-12, 14, 17, 18, 20, 21, 23).
