'Proud Signild', 'The Damsel of the Wood', and 'Damsel Mette': three ballads translated from the Danish by George Borrow. For the dating of the MSS. see the description of 2396. Ashley Library Catalogue, i, p. 53. As follows:―
1. 'Proud Signild'; 1842- [1857?]. Autograph fair copy, with a few pencil revisions, written on both sides of three quarto leaves of grey laid paper. Watermark '1842' and lion with trident on crowned shield. Entitled as above in Borrow's hand. Printed in The Works of George Borrow, vii, 1923, pp. 387-393. ff. 4-6b.
2. 'The Damsel of the Wood'; [1828-1829?]. Autograph fair copy, heavily revised, written on both sides of two quarto leaves of white laid paper. Watermark 'Thomas James' and part of figure of Britannia. The MS. is entitled as above in Borrow's hand, and below the title has 'Chorus. / In the summer tide'. The stanzas have been numbered by Borrow. The paper appears to match that of ff. 18 and 19, suggesting the same date. Printed in The Works of George Borrow, vii, 1923, pp. 372-375, apparently from a different MS. ff. 13-14b.
3. 'Damsel Mette'; 1828-[1829?]. Autograph fair copy, heavily revised, written on both sides of two quarto leaves of white laid paper. Watermark '1828' and part of figure of Britannia. The MS. is entitled as above, and the stanzas numbered, in Borrow's hand. The first stanza has two choruses, the first 'Neath the linden tree!' following l. 1, the second 'Neath the linden tree watches the lord of my heart' following l. 2. Printed in The Works of George Borrow, vii, 1923, pp. 367-371, apparently from a different MS. ff. 18-19b.
Bound up with the MSS. is a copy of Wise's privately printed Proud Signild and other ballads, 1913 (ff. 1-3, 7-12, 15-17, 20-22). The text of the pamphlet is the same as that in The Works of George Borrow.
