'Niels Ebbesen' and 'Germand Gladenswayne': two ballads translated from the Danish by George Borrow. For the dating of the MSS. see the description of 2396. Ashley Library Catalogue, i, p. 54. As follows:―
1. 'Niels Ebbesen'; 1824-[1829?]. Autograph fair copy, with a few revisions, two in pencil, written on both sides of six quarto leaves of white laid paper. Watermark 'J Simmons / 1824' and figure of Britannia. The MS. is entitled as above, and the stanzas numbered, in Borrow's hand. Printed in The Works of George Borrow, vii, 1923, pp. 340-352. ff. 4-9b.
2. 'Germand Gladenswayne'; [before 1857?]. Autograph fair copy, with pencil revisions, written on both sides of five quarto leaves of blue laid paper, on one side only of a sixth leaf of the same and on both sides of a quarto leaf of blue wove paper. Watermark figure of Britannia. There is an eighth, blank, leaf conjoined with the first, and all the leaves appear to form part of bifolia, and to be arranged as a quire. Entitled as above in Borrow's hand. Printed in The Works of George Borrow, vii, 1923, pp. 112-119. ff. 19-25.
Bound up with the MSS. is a copy of Wise's privately printed Niels Ebbesen and Germand Gladenswayne, 1913 (ff. 1-3, 10-18, 26-30).
