'My dainty Dame, my heart's delight' and 'The Cuckoo': two poems translated from the Welsh of Dafydd ab Gwilym by George Borrow. In 1854 Mrs Borrow wrote 'He will, I expect at Christmas, publish his other work, together with his poetry in all the European languages'. In The Romany Rye, 1857, there appeared an advertisement for a forthcoming work Songs of Europe; or, Metrical Translations from all the European Languages. This was never published. Ashley Library Catalogue, i, p. 60.
1. 'My dainty Dame'; [before 1857?]. Autograph fair copy, with pencil revisions, written on both sides of one quarto leaf of grey wove paper, and on one side only of another. The leaves are conjoined. No watermark. The MS. has no title. Printed in The Works of George Borrow, viii, 1923, pp. 260-261. ff. 163-164.
2. 'The Cuckoo'; 1844-[1857?]. Autograph fair copy, with revisions in pen and in pencil, written on both sides of two conjoined leaves of white laid paper. Watermark 'Stowford / Mills / 1844'. Entitled as above in Borrow's hand. Printed in The Works of George Borrow, viii, 1923, pp. 257-259. ff. 165-166b.
