'The Maid of Arc': a poem by Gordon Bottomley; 1918. Autograph fair copy, written on both sides of two large quarto leaves of white wove paper. Watermark 'WHS / Emissary Bond'. Entitled 'A Hymn to The Maid of Arc, in time of war', and paginated 1-4, in Bottomley's hand. Signed 'GB' in monogram. The MS. version has seven additional stanzas suppressed in the text as printed in Poems of Thirty Years, 1925, pp. 166-168, four before the first stanza as printed, and three between stanzas 9 and 10. In addition the MS. differs from the printed text by six words and the transposition of ll. 22 and 23. Accompanying the MS. is a letter (ff. 1, 1b) from Bottomley to Edmund Gosse, 8 Sept. 1918, sending the poem, and chiefly concerned with John Drinkwater's work at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre and his play Abraham Lincoln, 1918.
