'Portrait / Pierre l'ermite': an exercise in French composition by Charlotte Brontë; 23 June [1842]. Autograph fair copy, written on both sides of four quarto leaves of white wove paper, and on one side only of a fifth. No watermark. The MS. is entitled as above in Charlotte's hand, and signed and dated above the title 'Charlotte Brontë Le 23 Juin'. The devoir has been corrected in pencil by Constantin Heger. Printed in Elizabeth Gaskell, The Life of Charlotte Brontë, 1857, i, pp. 259-264. Another MS. of the same exercise, entitled in an unidentified hand 'Imitation: Portrait de Pierre l'Hermite', and dated 31 July 1842, is in the John Rylands Library, Manchester.
