'The Wool is Rising. or, The Angrian Adventurer': a volume contributed by Patrick Branwell Brontë to the imaginary history written between 1829 and 1839 principally by Branwell and Charlotte Brontë; 1834. Autograph fair copy, with revisions and deletions, written on both sides of eleven octavo leaves of white wove paper, and on one side only of a twelfth (f. 1). Watermark '[monograph] / 1828'. The leaves are each conjoined with another, and are arranged as a quire. The history consists of a title page written in imitation of print (in the margin is the note in normal handwriting 'My Country') (f. 1), and eight chapters written in minute script in imitation of print. Chapters I and VIII contain some verses. The title page is signed and dated 'PB Bronte / June. 26. AD 1834.', the head of Chapter V 'June 12: / AD 1834 / PBB', and the end 'PB Bronte ― / Finished June 26 . AD / 1834.'. Bound in the original blue paper wrappers. Also included is that part of the galleys of Ashley Library Catalogue which bears the description of this MS. For an account of this part of the history of Angria see Winifred Gérin, Branwell Brontë, 1961, pp. 63-67. A facsimile of the present MS. is printed in The Shakespeare Head Brontë, Miscellaneous and Unpublished Writings of Charlotte and Patrick Branwell Brontë, vol. i, 1936, pp. 412-434.
