'On an Expensive Volume of Verse': a poem by Andrew Lang; before 1912. Autograph fair copy, written on one side only of two conjoined leaves of octavo white laid writing paper headed '8 GIBSON PLACE / ST. ANDREWS / SCOTLAND'. Watermark 'BOTHWELL' and crowned lion rampant on shield. Entitled as above in Lang's hand, and signed at the end 'A Lang'. The verses were sent by Lang to Clement Shorter on learning that Shorter had paid 4 guineas for a copy of his Ballads and Lyrics of Old France. Privately printed by Shorter in Ode on A Distant Memory of 'Jane Eyre', 1912, and reprinted in The Poetical Works of Andrew Lang, 1923, vol. iii, p. 218. [Ashley Library Catalogue, i, p. 87].
