Letters to T. J. Wise from Joseph Conrad and other correspondents; 1918-1924. Ashley Library Catalogue, viii, p. 127. As follows:―
1. Letters (42) from Joseph Conrad; 2 Oct. 1918-20 Dec. 1923. Mostly autograph, some typewritten signed (2 Oct. 1918, 7 March, 5 May, 30 Sept. 1919, 19 Jan., 5 March, 20 May, 21, 23 June, 9 July, 16 Aug., 1 Nov. 1920, 26 March 1923). The letters chiefly concern: the purchase by Wise from Conrad of MSS. and corrected typescripts of the latter's work, among which are 'The Rescue' (2 Oct. 1918, 19 July 1920), 'The Book of Job' (21 June 1921, 29 Nov. 1922), 'The Rover' (20 July 1922), and of certain of the prefaces written for the Complete Edition of his works; the signing by Conrad of copies of first editions of his works at the request of Wise; and the printing by Wise in pamphlets of articles etc. written by Conrad. In some of the letters Conrad describes his modus operandi (2 Oct., 2 Dec. 1918, 1 Nov. 1920), and mentions work on which he was engaged at the time, for instance The Rescue (2 Dec. 1918), 'The Strong Man', a film scenario based on 'Gaspar Ruiz' (22, 24 Oct., 1 Nov. 1920), The Rover (20 July 1922) and Suspense (9 July 1920, 1 March 1923). Conrad also describes those of his MSS. in the possession of John Quinn (2 Oct. 1918, 31 July 1923), and comments on the sale of the Quinn collection (31 Oct., 20 Dec. 1923). In the letter of 31 July 1923 he also notes MSS. of his works whose whereabouts he cannot remember ('The Nigger of the "Narcissus"', 'Nostromo', 'Under Western Eyes', 'Tales of Unrest', 'Youth', 'Typhoon', and 'Set of Six'). The letters of 2 Oct. 1918 and of 1 Nov. 1920 are printed, with the silent amendment of 'nineteenth' for 'twentieth' in the earlier, and with the omission of the second half in the later, together with the substitution of '100' for '109' in l. 8 and '100' for '110' in l. 9, in G. Jean-Aubry, Joseph Conrad. Life and Letters, vol. ii, 1927, pp. 209 and 249-250.
