'James Payn': an appreciation of James Payn by Henry James; 1898. Autograph draft, nevertheless apparently marked up as printer's copy, written on one side only of sixteen quarto leaves of ruled white wove paper. No watermark. The MS. is entitled 'James Payne' in James' hand at the head of the first leaf (f. 1). Another, unidentified, hand has added 'by Henry James'. Marks in pencil (again in another hand) indicate the portion of the final paragraph which was printed in the Illustrated London News for 2 April 1898 under the heading 'A Tribute from Mr. Henry James', with a facsimile of James' signature, possibly taken from the foot of f. 16 where part of the leaf has been removed and a different paper substituted. The article as a whole, but with some material omitted (i.e. six lines on f. 9, and from f. 12, l. 3, to f. 14, l. 2), was published in the Illustrated London News for 9 April 1898 under the heading 'The Late James Payn / by Henry James'. ff. 1-16. Also included are two letters from Henry James to Clement Shorter, concerning the publication of the piece, and commenting 'I have found it difficult, and this is the only way I could do it'; 28 March 1898, [29 March 1898?]. ff. iii-vi.
