'Ye treue and pitifulle historie of ye Poet and ye ancient dame': a series of eleven caricatures by Edward Burne Jones commenting on an incident in the life of Algernon Charles Swinburne; 1868. The caricatures are drawn on eleven irregularly sized and shaped scraps of white laid paper, without watermark. Each is numbered and has a caption in the hand of Burne Jones. On the last caricature is the address 'Brunswick House / 22 Marina / St Leonards on Sea.'. The caricatures are accompanied by a paper folder bearing the autograph title as above, and an envelope addressed to Algernon C. Swinburne postmarked 24 April 1868. (According to Bernard Falk, The Naked Lady, 1952, p. 205, Adah Isaacs Menken went to St Leonards in the winter of 1867/68). The caricatures purport to give an account of an incident in the liaison which subsisted in 1867 and early 1868 between Swinburne and Adah Isaacs Menken, an American vaudeville actress, famous for her rôle as Mazeppa. Ashley Library Catalogue, ii, pp. 213-214.
