'Summer in England 1914': a poem by Alice Meynell; 1914. Autograph fair copy of stanzas 1-3, written on one side only of a quarto leaf of ruled white wove paper. No watermark. Entitled as above, and signed 'Alice Meynell'. The text found in the MS. is identical, except that it has 'ten' for 'a' in line 16, with that printed in Poems on The War, 1915, where a facsimile of this MS. is included on p. 7. The poem was first published in the Times for 10 Oct. 1914. The text is as in the pamphlet, except that in line 4 there is no comma after 'houses', and between stanzas 4 and 5 is the sub-title "A REPLY". Accompanying the MS. is a letter (f. 177) from Alice Meynell to C. K. Shorter, 8 Oct. [1914?], thanking him for taking trouble on her behalf. [Ashley Library Catalogue, iii, p. 142].
