Letters (34) from Helen Snee to Arthur O'Shaughnessy; 24 July 1869-17 May 1876. The first twenty-seven letters, from 24 July 1869-24 Dec. 1871, cover the period of O'Shaughnessy's and Helen Snee's love affair (ff. 6-9, 11-15, 17-21b, 23-25b, 31-32b, 34-37b, 39-42b, 44-47b, 49-52b, 54-59b, 61-66b, 68-72b). The letters on ff. 44-45b, and 72, 72b are imperfect. The twenty-eighth letter, dated 29 Nov. [1872?], concerns the return of books and letters (f. 73). The remaining six letters, written between 25 April and 17 May 1876, were sent from the House of Detention and from Newgate Gaol while Helen Snee was awaiting trial on the charge of conspiring with one William Vance to procure her suicide (ff. 77, 77b, 82, 82b, 90, 91-94b, 96-97b). Also included are a letter from O'Shaughnessy to Helen Snee dated 22 May 1870 (ff. 26-29), and four letters from John Payne to O'Shaughnessy concerning Helen Snee's trial, written between 25 April and 1 May 1876 (ff. 75-76, 78-79, 84-86b). Bound up with the letters is a photograph of Helen Snee (f. 2) and a copy of the pamphlet A Pathetic Love Episode in a Poet's Life, 1916, in which the letters were printed by Clement Shorter (ff. 1, 3-5, 10, 16, 22, 30, 33, 38, 43, 48, 53, 60, 67, 74, 80, 83, 89, 95, 98).
