'Nuptial Sleep': sonnet V of 'The House of Life' by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, as printed in his Poems, 1870; [1869]. Autograph fair copy, with revisions, written on one side only of a quarto leaf of ruled cream laid paper, identical with that used for 3845. No watermark. The MS. is entitled 'Placatâ Venere' in Rossetti's hand. The text found in the MS. differs markedly in ll. 1, 5 and 6, and by two or three words in ll. 2, 3 and 8, from that first printed in Poems, 1870, p. 193. The poem was omitted by Rossetti from 'The House of Life' as printed in Ballads and Sonnets, 1881. On the verso is a rough pencil sketch of a warrior with shield and spear. W. M. Rossetti, in The Works of Dante Gabriel Rossetti, 1911, assigns to the poem the date 1869. Ashley Library Catalogue, ix, pp. 114-115, where the MS. is reproduced.
