'The Bride's Prelude': a poem by Dante Gabriel Rossetti; [1870?]. Auto-graph fair copy, with many revisions, deletions and additions, written on one side only of twenty-eight quarto leaves of ruled white laid paper, and on both sides of a further seventeen (ff. 1, 4, 7, 10, 15, 16, 22, 29, 32, 34, 35, 38, 40, 43, 45). The upper quarter of f. 39 has been cut away. No watermark. The poem is entitled 'The Bride's Prelude', altered from 'The Bride's Chamber', in Rossetti's hand. In pencil he has added the alternative words 'A Bridal'. At the foot of f. 1 is the deleted note, with an x to indicate its intended position at the head of the page, in Rossetti's hand: 'This fragment ^was^ written very early and ^has been^ little [altered] retouched since, [is [imperfect] defective enough, not only because unfinished; and the reader's] ^some^ indulgence ^from the reader may be^ [is] needed to justify its rescue so far from total oblivion'. At the end of the poem on f. 45 is the note 'End of Part I'. On f. 45b is a synopsis in pencil and Rossetti's hand of the remainder of the poem. On f. ii is a note by William Michael Rossetti, signed and dated 30 June 1893, concerning the date of composition of the poem and of this MS. There is also an ownership inscription of Charles Fairfax Murray dated 24 Jan. 1900. Also included is a letter (f. iii) from Dante Gabriel Rossetti to W. T. Watts[-Dunton] inviting him to dine, and consulting him about a title for the poem; [1870-1880?]. The letter is printed in Doughty and Wahl, op. cit., iv, 1967, p. 1875. Ashley Library Catalogue, iv, pp. 141-142.
