College Essays by Algernon Charles Swinburne; [1856-1857]. A quarto notebook, in the original black embossed paper covers, containing the autograph fair copies of various college essays by Swinburne. The notebook is signed 'A.C. Swinburne' on f. 1. The leaves of the notebook are of white wove paper, without watermark, and Swinburne has used one side of the leaves only. Ashley Library Catalogue, vi, p. 35. For a similar notebook see Ashley MS. 5069. As follows:―
1. 'Sources of Greek History'. Initialled at end 'R.S.' [Robert Scott, Master of Balliol]. ff. 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.
2. 'On Deductive and Inductive Reasoning'. ff. 7, 8, 9, 10.
3. 'Of Analogy'. Initialled at end 'R.S.'. ff. 11, 12, 13, 14.
4. 'Origin of Moral Ideas'. Initialled at end 'E.C.W.'. [Edward Cooper Woollcombe, Fellow of Balliol]. ff. 15, 16, 17, 18.
5. 'Period of Mythical Philosophy'. Initialled at end 'E.C.W.'. At the foot of the last page (f. 24) Swinburne has made the note 'Monday - Theaetetus' Theory of Numbers Friday - the earliest philosophers Ritter's and Preuller's Fragments'. ff. 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24.
6. 'The Constitutional influence of small Republics'. Initialled at end in pencil 'E.C.W.'. ff. 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30.
