'This is what I wish my foemen': a poem by Algernon Charles Swinburne; [1863-1865?]. Autograph draft, written on both sides of one octavo leaf of white laid mourning paper (f. 25) (no watermark) and on one side only of another (f. 26) (watermark '[ ] & SONS / [ ]3'). The poem is a satire on Robert Browning. On f. 25b a couplet has been added in the margin: 'Here lies and stinks a bard who ere he died / In soul and tongue more foully stank and lied'. Published in C. Y. Lang, New Writings by Swinburne, 1964, pp. 200-202, with one error, 'soul' for 'foul' in l. 43. Bound up with the MS. are two letters from D. G. Rossetti, to Clarence Fry, 21 March 1876 (ff. 22, 22b), and to W. T. Watts[-Dunton], 1878 (ff. 23-24), both concerning, among other matters, the activities of Charles Augustus Howell, and a letter from John Forster to A. C. Swinburne, 4 Nov. 1866 (ff. 27-28b), thanking him for the gift of a copy of his Notes on Poems and Reviews, 1866. The letters from Rossetti are printed in O. Doughty and J. R. Wahl, Letters of Dante Gabriel Rossetti, iv, 1967, p. 1604. Ashley Library Catalogue, vi, pp. 68-70.
