College Essays by A. C. Swinburne; [1856-1857]. A large quarto notebook, in the original marbled paper covers with a roan back, containing the autograph fair copies of various college essays by Swinburne. The notebook is signed 'A C Swinburne' in pencil inside the front cover. The leaves of the notebook are of white wove paper, without watermark. Five leaves have been torn out at the beginning of the notebook. For the most part Swinburne has used one side of the paper only. Ashley Library Catalogue, vi, p. 37. For a similar notebook see 4349. As follows:―
1. 'Note on Roman and Feudal Law'. ff. 2, 3, 4.
2. Untitled essay on Charlemagne. ff. 5, 6, 7, 8, 9.
3. 'Crusades'. ff. 10, 11, 12, 13, 14.
4. An untitled account of the reign of Louis IX of France. ff. 15-37.
5. 'Joinville'. Unfinished. ff. 38-49 (rectos only).
At the end of the notebook, reversed, are notes on Henry Hallam's View of the State of Europe during the Middle Ages, Chapters I, parts i and ii (down to 1368), and II, part ii, the first few pages. ff. 50b-58b.
