A Collection of Ballads compiled by A. C. Swinburne, and an intro-duction or short essay; [1859-1861?]. Most of the ballad texts, which Swinburne prepared by collating existing texts, are accompanied by his critical notes. The latest authorities cited are Child's third volume and Aytoun's Ballads of Scotland, both published in 1858. An enlarged edition of Aytoun appeared in 1861, and may well have discouraged Swinburne from continuing his edition further. Ashley Library Catalogue, vi, pp. 45-46. As follows:―
1. An essay, entitled 'T[he] B[allads] of the E[nglish] B[order]', written on one side only of five quarto leaves of blue wove paper. No watermark. T. J. Wise claims that it was intended as an introduction to Swinburne's collection of ballads, but there is no evidence to connect the two, and indeed the ballads themselves are for the most part Scottish. ff. 1-5.
2. The text of the ballads, twenty-seven in all, written on both sides of thirty-two folio leaves of blue laid paper, and on one side only of a further six. Watermarks 'J H Busbridge', 'E Towgood' / 1860', 'E Towgood / 1859', 'E Towgood / 1861', and the figure of Britannia. Two of the ballads, 'Lady Isabel' and 'Lizzie Wan', are represented twice. ff. 6-43b.
Folio; ff. ii+43.
