'My Book and I': an essay by Walt Whitman; [1886?]. Autograph fair copy, with many revisions, and with scraps of MS. on different papers, and cuttings from printed works, pasted on to the original leaves. The essay occupies one side only of twenty-one leaves of cream wove paper measuring 12 x 6.5 inches, and both sides of a further leaf (f. 13). The essay was first printed in Lippincott's Magazine for Jan. 1887, and is an early version of 'A Backward Glance'. This MS. has served as printer's copy, and bears compositors' names as well as being marked up for the press in red ink. On f. 13b Whitman has calculated the number of words in a page of the magazine compared with the number in a page of the MS. The essay appears originally to have started on f. 6 where the title 'My Book and I' has been deleted. Folios 1-5 were added later, which necessitated renumbering the folios as far as f. 12 (formerly 7). The essay is signed at the end 'Walt Whitman'. Ashley Library Catalogue, vii, p. 206.
