Translation of Portions of the Decameron by A. C. Swinburne; after 1858. Autograph fair copy, with revisions, written on one side only of seven octavo leaves of cream laid paper watermarked 'C Harris / 1858' (ff. 1-7), and on both sides of one folio leaf of blue laid paper (f. 8) and one side only of another (f. 9), both watermarked with the figure of Britannia. Ashley Library Catalogue, vi, p. 41. As follows:―
1. Beginning of the introduction to the fourth day, 'Here begins the fourth day of the Decameron in which, under the government of Filostrato, discourse is held of those whose loves came to evil end'. The passage ends 'All which things, God knows, I hear and receive with a quiet mind'. ff. 1-3.
2. Passage beginning 'The ninth story'. / Messer Guglielmo Rossiglione gives his wife to eat the heart of Messer Guglielmo Guardaslagna . . .' and ending '. . . and seeing it was now night, returned to his castle'. ff. 4-7.
3. Passage with autograph title 'VIII Story of V. Day', beginning 'Now it came to pass, after the reports of old men', and ending 'he cast about to get him some comfort' (foot of f. 8b). At the head of f. 9 the passage begins 'And so long he waited, even until they were returned and laid in bed together . . .', and ends ' . . . I abide with him in all good grace and in quietness.' ff. 8-9.
