'Eton: another Ode' and 'Cuckoo Weir: an Ode': two burlesque poems by A. C. Swinburne; [1891?]. Autograph fair copies, with many revisions, written in the case of 'Eton: another Ode' on one side only of a folio leaf of cream wove paper (f. 1a), and in the case of 'Cuckoo Weir' on one side only of a folio leaf of cream wove paper (f. 1b), and on both sides of a further leaf of the same (ff. 2, 2b). Watermark 'Hieratica / (a vegetable Parchment) / J. S & Co.' 'Eton: another Ode' is a flagellational skit on Swinburne's 'Eton: an Ode', composed in 1891, while 'Cuckoo Weir' is a flagellational parody of Swinburne's own 'On the South Coast'. 'Eton: an Ode' is dedicated to Mary Gordon, Mrs Disney Leith, with the words 'To M.', and is inscribed with two remarks written in pencil addressed to her in the simple cypher which Swinburne and Mary Gordon used when writing of flagellational subjects. 'Cuckoo Weir' bears the spurious attribution in Swinburne's hand '(By Arthur Clement Swinfield)', while 'Eton: another Ode' has, also in Swinburne's hand, "'The other boy' did this for me". On ff. 3-13 is a typewritten transcription of the poems. Ashley Library Catalogue, vi, p. 179.
