'Confidential Paper on Swinburne': by Edmund Gosse; [1917]. Auto-graph fair copy, written on one side only of twenty-nine quarto leaves of ruled cream wove paper. No watermark. ff. 5-33. The paper, which is not entitled, was written in response to the comment that Gosse in his Life of Swinburne, 1917, had not dealt with Swinburne's drunkenness, nor with his sexual proclivities. It is preceded by 'A Note', initialled 'E. G.', and dated 'June 23. 1920', concerning two flagellational poems by Swinburne, 'The End of a Half' and 'The Schoolboy's Tragedy', the MSS. of which, apparently dated June 1893, were destroyed by T. J. Wise and Gosse (f. 2), and by 'Swinburne's agitation', thus entitled by Gosse, and initialled 'E. G.', describing Swinburne's behaviour when excited by ideas (ff. 3, 4). The MS. is accompanied by a typewritten transcription (ff. 34-59), and by letters from various persons to whom Gosse had shown his 'Confidential Paper', as follows:―
1. John Bailey; 29 Jan. 1918. ff. 60-64b.
2. Max Beerbohm; 19 March 1919. ff. 65-68.
3. A. C. Bradley; 10 Nov. [after 1917]. ff. 69-70.
4. R. B. Haldane; 14 Nov. 1917. ff. 71, 71b.
5. A. E. Housman; 20 Jan. 1919. ff. 72-73b.
6. Walter Raleigh; 17 May 1919. ff. 74-75.
Also included is the front of the envelope in which the paper was returned to Gosse by [Haldane?]. The paper is printed in C. Y. Lang, Swinburne Letters, vi, 1962, pp. 233-248.
