MAX STAFFORD-CLARK PAPERS. VOL. LIII. 'The libertine', by Stephen Jeffreys; first performed by the Out Of Joint theatre company in 1994 (later revised for the Steppenwolf company in New York where the leading role was played by John Malkovich). Cover sheet of script originally dated 'First Draft May 1994' but this has been altered to read 'First half Aug. 1994, second half June'. Annotated by Stafford-Clark throughout, mostly in pencil. Towards the end of the script two revised sections - in the form of photostat copies of lines apparently hastily written on lined file paper, and not by Stafford-Clark - have been added. There is also an information sheet relating to the cast and backstage personnel, and a rough ink sketch of a stage setting and some stage machinery.
