Whilst Home Secretary, Graham acceded to Lord Aberdeen's request to have the correspondence of the Italian nationalist Giuseppe Mazzini intercepted and opened. It was suspected that Aberdeen was passing intelligence on Mazzini thus acquired to the Austrian government. Includes French and Italian reports and despatches, some printed, regarding Mazzini, with translations; despatches of David Morier, Minister Plenipotentiary to the Swiss Confederation, and Lord Holland, Secretary to the Embassy, Florence; Lord Palmerston's replies to Morier's despatches; details of warrants issued by the British government allowing the intercepting and opening of mail by the General Post Office, with copies of warrants; a petition signed by Mazzini, William Linton, and William Lovett protesting at the opening of mail; notes on the remit and composition of a parliamentary secret committee on the Post Office, along with its printed report; printed extracts of British government despatches which refer to Mazzini; notes of parliamentary debates made by Sir James Graham; and copies of oaths taken by Privy Councillors and Secretaries of State; 1832-1845, n.d.
