The first of two baptismal registers of the church of St Theodor, Basel. This volume records baptisms during the years 1490-1625.
Contents:
ff. 1r-6v: Calendar in Latin. Printed, with rubrics in red.
ff. 7r-7v: Ceremonies performed in preparation for use of the baptismal font, comprising: the blessing of the salt ('Exorciso te creatura salis per deum...vivos et mortuos et seculum per ignem. Amen') followed by a prayer ('Immensam clemenciam tuam...impugancione spiritalis nequicie'); the blessing of the water ('Exorciso te creatura aqua...vivos et mortuos et seculum per ignem. Amen') followed by a prayer ('Deus qui ad salutem humani...impugancionibus defensa'); the blessing of the salt and water together ('Deus invicte virtutis...adesse dignetur') followed by a prayer ('Exaudi nos omnipotens Deus...in hoc tabernaculo'). Printed, with rubrics in red.
The printed leaves have been taken from a Missale Basiliense (Basel: [Michael Wenssler, 18 March 1488) (Incunabula Short Title Catalogue no. im00651500). The British Library holds a copy at IB.37136.

f. 8r: Note by Johann Ulrich Surgant, curate of the church of St Theodor, Basel, regarding the preparation of this book for the recording of baptisms at his church; dated 1490. Below, two baptisms have been entered.

Dimensions: 310 x 220 mm.
Foliation: i + 402 (plus eleven blank, unfoliated leaves, as follows: two at the beginning, three after f. 7, one after f. 8, three after f. 31, one after f. 385 and one at the end). Folio i is a small square of paper pasted onto the second front endleaf, containing a description of the manuscript in Latin and French. Folio 154* is a partially torn-out leaf after f. 154.
Script: Secretary and Humanistic cursive.
Binding: Pre-1600. Swiss, late 15th-century. Oak boards, the spine and one-third of each board covered with blind-stamped pigskin. Remains of two brass clasps.
